If you’re experiencing foot pain, you may be wondering what could be causing it. Many conditions affect the feet, and one such condition is known as a neuroma. Today, Dr. William Buffone of North Fork Podiatry/Three Village Podiatry is sharing information to relieve your anxiety about this condition.

What Are the Symptoms?

The most common symptom is pain at the location of the neuroma, most commonly between the toes. It can also cause:

  • A burning feeling;

  • Numbness in the foot;

  • Tingling in the ball of the foot.

Walking is often especially painful for patients who are suffering from a neuroma. The person often assumes that they have a pebble in their shoe at the onset of the pain, as the tumor can cause swelling in the foot.

What Causes Neuromas?

There is no one cause of a neuroma; however, there are some possible options to consider. For instance, trauma to the foot can cause swelling and abnormalities in the anatomy of the foot such as extra bones or flat feet. They can also be caused by stress injuries from high-impact activities, wearing poorly-fitting footwear, or spending numerous hours on your feet.

Can a Neuroma Be Treated at Home?

If you suspect that you have a neuroma, you can try certain in-home therapies to diminish your discomfort. Ice massages can reduce swelling and pain in the foot.

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines can also relieve your discomfort. Your podiatrist may recommend orthotics that will redistribute the pressure on your foot when you’re standing or walking to reduce pain and irritation.

What Medical Treatments Are Available?

In addition to home remedies, a number of medical treatments can also help relieve your discomfort. In some cases, corticosteroid shots are used to alleviate inflammation and reduce pain.

Your podiatrist can also remove the ligament that is applying pressure to the affected nerve or remove the nerve entirely. In most cases, podiatrists leave this as a last resort.
